Hello Rob. I just signed in today. Good thing Google lists you at #1 when doing a "bebop lines" search. Cool deal. I really found this post useful, many thanks indeed!

Some info about me, I play guitar, was recently convinced to stay with the 6 string instead of seeking boutique 7 and 8 strings, it just compounds things way too much, and 6 strings have done so well and have so much still to uncover for me!

Main per peeve at the moment: too much time reading all-inclusive theories, the ones which relate many chords to the same single chord (i.e. "any chord from a particular key can replace any other")and about converting anything to a minor. Issue here is that I can take a tune and translate and transpose it and it kinda ends being "Am7 - Am7 - Am7 - Am7 - Gm7 - Gm7 - Gm7 - Am7" which leaves me with Dorian - Dorian - Dorian - Harmonic Min - Dorian - Natural min, etc. I am a big fan of the modes but for me they are becoming rather the same flavor for some reason (lack of creativity mainly), specially on a one key progression.

So, bebop it is. I do think learning scales up and down up and down for so long have ingrained them in that way when I play, up and down just comes out. I need to break this pattern really quick.

Thanks Rob, looking forward to posting something positive in the near future. Regards.

Good article. A lot of what you mention is what Barry Harris preaches in his how-to books, and since I've stopped taking formal lessons for now, all the information on your site is really helpful.
