famous alto break

In my post on Night in Tunisia I mentioned a famous alto break by Bird. Here’s that break so you can listen to it, hear what I’m talking about and be amazed.

This is just the break, not the full tune, so as to remain within fair use. This excerpt is expressly for educational purposes, please don’t ask to send you the file for the whole track.

This is a pretty amazing piece of sax playing. Having the CD containing the alternate takes for this session, I can tell you that this was something worked out ahead of time, not spontaneous. The three takes have solos that differ somewhat but the break is the same. Miles Davis appears on this as well. This track is on tons of different compilation CDs and should be easy to find. This was recorded March 28, 1946, and the personnel are:

Miles Davis (tpt); Charlie Parker (as); Eli “Lucky” Thompson (ts); Arvin Garrison (g); Michael “Dodo” Marmarosa (p); Vic McMillan (b); Roy Porter (d)
