video: I Love You

Video of Cole Porter’s “I Love You.” Straight ahead swing.

My notes:
I was a little slow when capturing this and chopped the first note a litle short. The first chord is one of those things people differ on. I am playing Dbmaj, but Gm7b5 is used a lot. Either way, it’s the II chord belonging to F, functionally, altered to fit the melody. The melody opens with the interval of a descending major 7th, which is awesome, and really unusual. I like to play a turnaround at the end of the form that “walks down” from Fmaj to Dbmaj at the top, which is what’s behind my preference for Db over G at the first chord.

At the end of the first phrase, when playing the head, I use a sub Fdim for Fmaj. For reasons I can’t exactly explain, I don’t do it while soloing though. I like the way it sounds with the D in the melody, but I guess when you are flying along with 8th notes, it makes less sense.

I also love how the second phrase modulates to A briefly. I don’t know why it works so well, but it’s just a great progression.

  1. I think your hand technique is similar to Bill Evans' and even a little Oscar Petersen. It sounds great - very hip bop stuff.

  6. impressive work, sounds like you need a bit of drums and bass over that little number youve played.
